The news that SDL bought Idiom is clearly huge. Anyone in the industry who has not heard the news and/or doesn't feel its weight is apparently living in a cave.
Several industry gurus have had some insightful commentary on the situation and the apparent vacuum created by this purchase. Check out Jost Zetzsche's commentary in the Tool Kit newsletter, and check out Common Sense Advisory's (CSA) commentary in the Global Watchtower blog. In CSA's conference call today (SDL buys Idiom: Now What?), the gurus mentioned Elanex several times as an alternative, and they also mentioned across, Translations.com, and a few others.
If you missed that call, and you'd like to discuss those alternatives, check out the free Localization UnConference in San Mateo, California on March 14th. As an UnConference, the program is not yet set, so register for the event, and you'll then receive a link the the portal where you can vote for ideas including the one titled "Alternatives to the SDL/Idiom GMS".
2/15/08 Update: Since posting this, "Alternatives to the SDL/Idioms GMS" has become the highest rated in the Localization UnConference's IdeaExchange powered by Salesforce.com.
