Have you ever been in the following situation? You have a document written in a foreign language, and you know you need it translated into your own language, but you don't know what type of translator to contact because you don't even know the language of the source document.
Jost Zetzsche made note of the TextCat Language Guesser in today's ToolKit. It's always best to confirm language identification with a human linguist, but for lack of a good friend who speaks all human languages, you can use one of the following free online language identifiers or language guessers:
- TextCat Language Guesser
- Xerox Language Identifier
- PetaMem Language Identifier
- PolyGlot 3000 (downloadable)
Update: Stephen Huffman's Language Identifier, the Druid Language Identifier, and Maciej Ceglowski's Language Identifier appear to no longer be available.
